Where To Go: Topkapı Palace

Topkapi Palace is one of the palaces with the oldest history and the largest area that has survived to the present day. The construction of Topkapı Palace started in 1460 after the conquest of Istanbul by Fatih Sultan Mehmed, and it was completed in 1478 after 18 years.

The name of the palace, whose first name was “Saray-ı Cedid-i Âmire” meaning “New Palace”, started to be called “Topkapı Palace” after the additional buildings, expansion and renovation works made during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II.

From this palace, which was used by thirty-one sultans from Mehmed the Conqueror to Sultan Abdülmecid, the state was administered for approximately 400 years.
